Gems Urges Hygiene Caution In Wake Of Parvovirus

Following an outbreak of parvovirus in Chesterfield, local cleaning specialist, Gems Hygiene, is urging animal industries to review their hygiene practices.

Sheffield-based Gems is highlighting the importance of using an effective cleaner in professional animal environments, after three cases of the deadly parvovirus were reported locally among dogs.

Gems’ enjoys close links with a growing number of clients from across the country who are involved in animal care, such as kennels, farms, stables and veterinary practices. These businesses recognise the value of Gems’ disinfectant, Gemexol, which is designed specifically to be safe for use in areas where pets and livestock are kept.

Gemexol has been approved by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) for protection against foot and mouth, diseases of poultry and general orders. It is also effective against MRSA and parvovirus and can be used to soak items such as clothing and bedding.

Sarah Wade, Gems Hygiene’s marketing manager, said: “It is very distressing to hear that dogs in Chesterfield are dying after contracting parvovirus. We hope local businesses involved in the care of animals will heed the warnings being issued by industry experts and pay particular attention to their standards of hygiene, ensuring the disease is brought under control and risk is minimised around animals who are too young to be inoculated.”
